If you don’t know where you are going,
how can you get there?
In part one HERE, I talked about getting your head in the right space.
Now you’ve got your game face on. You are ready to do this – Really do this. What is the first thing you do? Decide what you want your business to be. Yes, you want to do THAT CREATIVE THING you love. But you need to be more specific. Real specific.
Grab a piece of paper and a pen and brainstorm all your ideas. Use a pen and paper – it puts you in a more creative frame of mind than doing it on a computer. Don’t think too much – just write. Your first few ideas will be the obvious ones but then you’ll start getting some ideas you never even thought of before. Get the ideas flowing by thinking of all the things other artists do – it will give you lots of jumping off points for more ideas. Think quick and write fast. Don’t worry if you mis-spell something or write something down more than once. Just keep going.
The words in your head will be empowering. “I could do this idea. I could grow it into this”. Suddenly the word “can’t” will disappear from your vocabulary. You will feel excited about all the different things you could do and how you could expand your business.
Once you’ve done your brainstorming – look at your ideas. Some will jump out at you as something you are crazy excited about. You will dismiss other ideas as rubbish (but don’t throw them out altogether – a bad idea today, may be a great idea tomorrow). Find the one idea you really like and are super excited about. If you can’t narrow it down to just one, choose 2 or 3 that you may be able to make work together.
Now you have a starting point. You know where you want to go. Now we just need to make the map to get there.
